Club Tour to Wiltshire

 

Chelmsford Bowling Club President Roy Escott and 43 member’s  and friends have completed a successful club tour of Wiltshire. Playing six matches the club won four and lost two during their weeks stay. The results of the six rink matches were – against Malmesbury BC lost 102 – 128, Devises BC won 129 – 113, Wilton BC won 114 – 109, Wootton Bassett BC won 131 – 111, Chippenham Town BC lost 107 – 130 and Stratton Church Way BC won 133 – 92. The ‘Fred Gibney Trophy’ for the player of the tour was awarded to Tony Collings who had the best aggregate score for the whole week. Tour Organiser Roger Jones said, “We have played on some excellently prepared  bowling greens against very friendly Wiltshire folk. Our hotel at Wootton Bassett has been first class to round off another excellent club tour which stretch back to 1987”.

 

Writtle Hospital Cup

 

Chelmsford BC have reached the final of the Writtle Hospital Cup by beating Great Baddow BC in the semi-final 56 – 49 across three rinks. They now meet Falcon BC at Writtle BC on Saturday 11 September. Against Great Baddow the rink results were with Chelmsford skips named first – Ray Walker 21 Joe Harris 15, Martyn Gardner 15 Alan Francis 22, Jennie Wilson 20 Ian Dudley 12. All proceeds from this years event will be donated by the Writtle BC to the Essex Air Ambulance.

Club Tour to Wiltshire

 

Chelmsford Bowling Club embarks on it’s annual bowling tour on Saturday 14 August with President Roy Escott taking forty four members, partners and friends to Wiltshire. The tour party is based at the Wiltshire Hotel Golf & Country Club, Wootton Bassett. Tour organizer Roger Jones has arranged six afternoon matches against Malmesbury, Devizes, Wilton, Wootton Bassett, Chippenham Town and Stratton Churchway Bowling Clubs. Players will once again be competing for the ‘Fred Gibney’ cup which goes to the most successful player during the week.

 

Chelmsford & District Bowling Association competitions

 

The final matches in the Chelmsford & District BA League have now been completed with the Division 1 title going to Burnham Hillside ‘A’ who just beat Falcon ‘A’ to the top spot by three points. Relegated are Billericay ‘A’ and Chelmsford ‘A’.  Since the league was formed back in 1945 it is the first time that Chelmsford ‘A’ have not been represented in the top tier. However the club still has the Chelmsford ‘B’ team in place in this league who finished in a credible fifth place after their win against Billericay ‘A’. Promoted to Division 1 will be Great Baddow ‘A’ and Danbury ‘A’ after just one season in the second division. Chelmsford ‘C’ remain the only team across the five divisions to finish their matches with a 100% record winning Division 5 by a comfortable twenty seven points over second placed PML ‘B’. Central Midweek Bowling League competitions

 

Teams in the Central Midweek Bowling League have completed all of their matches for this season with Chelmsford BC winning two league titles. Chelmsford ‘A’ in Division 2 had a comfortable win at Tower Gardens against Stock & Buttsbury ‘A’ to win this division and gain promotion to the top tier next season. Chelmsford ‘C’ playing in Division 4 also captured their league title and move up to Division 3. Chelmsford ‘A’ 42 (8 Pts0 Stock & Buttsbury ‘A’ 25 (0). Chelmsford & District Bowling Association competitions

 

With just two matches to go in this season’s Chelmsford & District BA League competition the winners and those to be relegated in most divisions have still to be decided. In the Division 1 match between Writtle ‘A’ and Chelmsford ‘B’ the home side needed to win this match to stay in contention for the title and Chelmsford required as many points as possible to stay away from the relegation zone. Chelmsford made sure of their position in the top tier next season by winning which has dented Writtle’s hopes of retaining the title. Chelmsford ‘B’ 60 (8 Pts) – Writtle ‘A’ 55 (2 pts). Chelmsford ‘A’ met Southminster ‘A’ at Tower Gardens in a Division 1 match with the home side desperate for points to avoid the drop. Southminster had no axe to grind and put Chelmsford under pressure throughout this match. They secured an away win 51 – 61 to gain six points to Chelmsford’s four which plunged the home side into deep trouble at the foot of the table. Being the only team across the five divisions of the C&D League Chelmsford ‘C’ have already been crowned champions of Division 5. Chelmsford ‘B’ played Great Baddow ‘A’ in the ‘Atkinson Shield’ KO competition at Great Baddow Recreation Ground but on this occasion the Division 2 leaders mastered their green better and won by ten shots overall to progress to the semi final. In a tough match at Warriors Rest, Tiptree Division 2 leaders Chelmsford ‘A’ just managed to score sufficient shots against lowly placed Tiptree Jobserve ‘C’ two win and keep their title hopes alive. This keeps Chelmsford at the top of the league with just one match to play. Chelmsford ‘A’ 38 (6 pts) – Tiptree Jobserve ‘B’ 33 (2). Bowls England Women’s National Championships

 

Chelmsford’s Sue Jones as Essex Champion in the Two Bowl Singles competition represented Essex at the Bowls England Women’s National Championship Finals at Leamington Spa. In her first round match against Moira Pearson, Welford-on-Avon BC, Warwickshire Sue won 16 – 14 in their twenty one end game to progress to round two. In this next round against Nicola Elmer from Oakham BC, Leicestershire Jones had a close game with Elmer just having the better luck on the day to win 16 – 13. Elaine Scarborough of Aveley BC also represented Essex in this same competition winning through to round three where she came up against England International Amy Monkhouse, Cleethorpes BC, Lincolnshire but only just lost 13 – 14 against this high profile opponent. In the two previous rounds Scarborough had beaten Yvonne Hailstone, Reading BC 15 – 10 and Christine Cooper, Burton Latimer BC, Northamptonshire 15 – 7.

 

Essex County Men’s Bowling Association competitions

 

Chelmsford’s Graham Robson had a close fought six round match in the Essex Men’s Unbadged Singles competition against Richard Telling of Essex County BC, Westcliffe. Telling eventually won this match 21 – 17 to progress to the quarter final.

Sue is club’s first Women’s County Champion

 

Essex County Men’s and Women’s Bowling Association Competitions

 

Sue Jones of Chelmsford Bowling Club has become the first lady club member to win an Essex County Women’s Bowling Association competition title by beating Elaine Scarborough of Aveley BC 14 – 11 in the County Two Bowl event. The final was played at Buckhurst Hill BC the home club of the Essex County WBA President Margaret Langwith. Jones played some excellent bowls to outclass the newly crowned four bowl singles champion Scarborough. Sue and Elaine now go forward to represent Essex in the Bowls England Women’s Two Bowls National event at Leamington Spa with Sue playing on Monday 2 August at 2.30pm against a qualifier from Warwickshire. Elaine plays on 3 August at 9.30am against a Berkshire qualifier. Roy Escott the Chelmsford BC President said, “Sue is a very good singles player and has won our own women’s club singles championship on no less than thirteen occasions”. He went on to say, “Being one of the club’s first three lady members back in 1979 we are so proud that she has achieved this success which she fully deserves and we wish her well at Leamington Spa”.

 

Graham Robson of Chelmsford BC continues to perform excellently in the Essex County Men’s Unbadged Singles competition having dispatched Seaton Corby of Kings Chase BC, Brentwood in the 5th round 21 - 14. This puts Robson through to the quarter final stage where he meets Richard Pelling, Essex County BC, Westcliffe on 2 August at Brentwood BC.

Chelmsford ‘A’ have played two matches this last week in C & D BA Division 1 and were hoping to capture substantial points from these games to help them out of the relegation zone. This was not the case and they now find themselves in deep trouble with just two matches to play this season. Against Falcon ‘A’ the current league leaders they had a narrow six shot defeat 52 – 58 and could only gain two points from a possible ten. Playing Southminster ‘A’ in a previously postponed match it was the same story going down again by just six shots overall 51 – 57 and taking just two points. Chelmsford ‘A’ are now second from bottom with 38 points with Billericay ‘A’ bottom on 36 points and Maldon ‘A’ in third place with 47 points. Falcon ‘A’ leads the table by two points over Burnham ‘A’ and Writtle ‘A’ who both have 80 points. Chelmsford ‘B’ fared no better in this same division going down 47 – 58 against Southminster ‘A’ and gaining only two points. Better news from Chelmsford ‘C’ team in Division 5 who have had a marvelous season and with two matches to play they have already captured this league title. Sue Jones - County Champion

Sue Jones has become Chelmsford Bowling Club's first ever Ladies County Champion after beating Elaine Scarborough 14-11 in the final of the Two Bowl competition.

 

Chelmsford Bowling Club – Men’s Open Tournament

 

Chelmsford Bowling Club staged their annual Men’s Open Fours Tournament sponsored by D J Knight Ltd at Tower Gardens on Sunday. Twenty teams competed from Essex and Kent for the ‘King Cup’ and £500 worth of prize money. On a fast running green the event got underway at 9.30am by the Mayor of Chelmsford Councilor Alan Arnott who bowled the first bowl. Each team played four matches of eleven ends throughout the day with the winner being decided on points scored - one point for every end won and ten points for a match win. A dramatic ending took place with Essex County BC, Westcliffe in the lead but on their last end against Old Marconi BC they conceded four shots to tie the match and finished with 54 points. This tie left the door open for excellently placed Chatham BC and Chelmsford BC who were both unbeaten and playing each other with the winners almost certain of lifting the cup. Chatham got quickly into their stride and were four shots up after two ends. Chelmsford rallied and won the next two ends by single shots. The fifth end proved to be the decider with Chatham picking up four shots and never looking back to go on to win the match 11 – 2 plus the ‘King Cup’ and £200 of prize money. 1st - Chatham BC 59 Pts (£200), 2nd - Essex County BC 54 (£100), 3rd - Pegasus BC 50 (£60), 4th - Falcon BC 48 (£48), 5th -Danbury BC 48 (£32), 6th – Chelmsford 2 BC  47 (£24), 7th - Harlow BC 44 (£20), 8th – The Barbarians BC 38 (£16). President Roy Escott praised everyone for a job well done in organizing this popular event and thanked the Mayor and Mayoress for their attendance. He also placed on record the clubs thanks for the sponsorship provided by D J Knight Ltd without which the event could not have taken place.

 

Chelmsford & District Bowling Association competitions

 

This week the Chelmsford & District BA KO team competition got underway with Chelmsford ‘A’ matched against Southminster ‘A’ at Tower Gardens. Despite Chelmsford’s poor showing this season in the league they pulled out all of the stops to easily beat Southminster 57 – 45 in the first round of the ‘Atkinson Shield’ KO for teams in Division 1 and 2. Fred Dowding beat Chris Brooks 19 – 11, Terry Little overcame Peter Spooner 22 – 10 with Phil Kyffin losing to Cyril Tyler 16 – 24. Chelmsford ‘A’ now meet Tillingham ‘A’ at Tillingham in the next round. Chelmsford ‘B’ team were also engaged in this competition against Falcon ‘A’ at Belsteads Farm Lane. Previously Falcon had trounced the B’s on two occasions in the league but in this encounter the Chelmsford outfit displayed excellent bowling to easily beat the home side by twenty five shots overall. The ‘Marconi Cup’ KO competition for teams in Divisions 3, 4 and 5 had Chelmsford ‘C’ playing Writtle ‘B’ at Tower Gardens with the visitors being too good winning by eighteen shots. In the Central Midweek Bowling League teams got back to their league programme after a week’s absence engaged on the League KO competition. Chelmsford ‘A’ in Division 2 currently head the table and are on course for promotion to the top division. Against Danbury ‘A’ at Tower Gardens the visitors made them work hard to retain their status forcing a draw across the two rinks. Chelmsford ‘A’ 38 (4 Pts) Danbury ‘A’ 38 (4). Adrian Thomas 19 Mary Stockwell 22, Ray Keeble 19 Cherry Richardson 16. Chelmsford ‘D’ in Division 6 had a one shot overall win against Crittall Bridge BC, Witham. Essex County Men’s & Ladies Bowling Association competitions

 

In the Essex County Women’s Two Bowl Semi Final Sue Jones of Chelmsford Bowling Club successfully won her way through to the final by beating Janet Collins of Rochford BC 17 – 12 after twenty ends played. Sue now meets the other semi final winner Elaine Scarborough of Aveley BC who required an extra end to beat Brig Gunn from Mersea Island BC being all level after the stipulated twenty one ends. The Essex finals take place at Buckhurst Hill BC on Wednesday 21 July. As Essex finalists Jones and Scarborough now represent Essex in the Bowls England Women’s National Championship Two Bowl event to be played on the Leamington Spa greens between 31 July and 15 August. Roy Escott the Chelmsford BC President said, “This is a marvelous achievement by Sue who is the first Chelmsford BC lady to play in the National Championship – we wish her every success at Buckhurst Hill and Leamington Spa”.

 

Chelmsford’s Graham Robson has reached the last sixteen in the Essex County Men’s Unbadged Singles competition and meets Seaton Corby of Kings Chase BC, Brentwood for a place in the quarter final. This match is to be played by 27 July on a selected neutral green.

Chelmsford played Bantham and Ongar BC in the quarter final of this KO competition organized by Writtle BC in aid of The Essex Air Ambulance. Chelmsford were good value winners by 25 shots overall. Chelmsford BC teams have had a black week in Essex County Men’s and Ladies BA competitions having been knocked out of four major events in the space of three days. First to go on Friday at Elm Park BC was the quartet of Keeble, McNally, Colbourne and Thomas in the quarter final of the men’s Fours against a very strong team from Essex County BC skipped by ex Falcon player Mark Morhall. On this same day Chelmsford played Elm Park in the County Shield second round and lost overall by just one shot with the away rinks winning comfortably. On Saturday Chelmsford met Stock BC in the County Double Fours competition with the Stock quartets winning by just three shots to progress to the next round. Again the away rink won their match on the tricky Stock green. On Sunday morning the Chelmsford Ladies ‘Top Club’ team travelled to Buckhurst Hill BC for their second round encounter. Sue Colbourne had an excellent game in the Singles against a very competent opponent Ros Pike and won an exciting match 21 – 17. The Pairs had Lesley Collings and Jennie Wilson up against Buckhurst Hill’s Thelma Ramsden and Daphne Wood who were too strong for the Chelmsford duo winning 26 – 11. The Triples event saw Chelmsford’s Sylvia Murray, Barbara Barnett and Pam Rout triumph 18 – 10 against Yvonne Hubble’s team. In the Fours Buckhurst Hill’s squad skipped by Margaret Langwith won comfortably 27 – 15 against Chelmsford’s Jan Walker, Rena Thomas, Beryl Little and Pauline Kyffin. This made the score 2 – 2 but Chelmsford lost the tie 80 – 65 on the overall shot count.

 

Chelmsford & District Bowling Association competitions

 

The only bright spot in the Chelmsford and District league competitions this week was the continued success of the Chelmsford ‘C’ team who remain the only unbeaten team across the five divisions. Chelmsford ‘A’ went down 54 (0 Pts) – 76 (10 Pts) against Writtle ‘A’ and remain in the Division 1 relegation zone. Chelmsford ‘B’ fared no better at Burnham Hillside BC where they lost 47 (0) – 63 (10) against second placed Burnham ‘A’ but they stay in fourth position in this same division. Table toppers Chelmsford ‘C’ in Division 5 continue to win and rack up the points this time beating Writtle ‘C’ 65 (8) – 40 (2).

 

Central Midweek Bowling League competitions

 

After last week defeat the Chelmsford ‘A’ team in Division 2 got back to winning ways by beating Tiptree Jobserve ‘A’ at Tiptree BC and stay top of their division. Chelmsford ‘A’ 48 (8 Pts) Tiptree Jobserve ‘A’ 25 (0). Also in Division 2 the Chelmsford ‘B’ team suffered a narrow defeat against Tiptree Jobserve ‘C’ 43 (2) – 45 (6). Chelmsford ‘C’ had a good win against Falcon ‘C’ in a Division 4 match winning 47 (8) – 34 (0) which keeps them at the top of the table.

Essex County Men’s & Ladies Bowling Association competitions

 

Playing at Great Baddow Recreation Ground against Great Baddow’s Essex County BA Area 3 fours finalists Eric Ovel, Ian Barker, Joe Harris and skip Martin King the Chelmsford BC four of Ray Keeble, Maurice McNally, Barry Colbourne and skip Adrian Thomas overcame the home side favourites to win through to the competition proper round one. In a close match with the lead swinging between the two teams the score at eight ends was all square at 8 – 8. The Great Baddow quartet scored seven shots over the next five ends to jump into the lead at 16 – 11. At this point the Chelmsford team came into their own to fight back to only allow the home side to score one more shot against Chelmsford’s eleven and finish victorious 22 – 17. Team skip Thomas said, “This has been a solid victory for us on an unfamiliar bowling surface against a far more experienced team and I must congratulate the team for their determination to win”. Chelmsford now meet the Essex County BC, Westcliffe  four of Brendan Glyde, John Stewart, Kevin Watkins and ex Falcon skip Mark Morhall in the quarter final at the Elm Park BC, Hornchurch on Friday 9 July at 6pm. In the Essex County Ladies Two Bowl Semi-Final Chelmsford’s Sue Jones plays Elaine Scarborough of Aveley BC at the Falcon BC green on July 15. The other semi-finalists are Janet Collins, Rochford BC and Brig Gunn, Mersea Island BC.

 

Chelmsford & District Bowling Association competitions

 

Chelmsford ‘A’ team in the Chelmsford & District BA league Division 1 got back to winning ways in Week 9 of the programme by beating lowly Billericay ‘A’ at Tower Gardens by 57 – 54 and scoring eight points to Billericay’s two. The rink details were with Chelmsford skips named first – Fred Dowding 12 Albert Ayres 20, Terry Little 24 Jim Pemberton 15, Phil Kyffin 21 Rex Hobbs 19. Chelmsford ‘B’ team also in Division 1 was away at Maldon Promenade Park to Maldon ‘A’. Their recent good form came to an abrupt end being soundly beaten by the hosts 62 – 51 who also captured eight points to Chelmsford’s two. Martyn Gardner 18 Brian Stubbings 28, Ray Walker 10 Andy Squire 25, Adrian Thomas 23 Mike Hartshorn 9. Chelmsford ‘C’ team playing in Division 5 remain the only team across the five C&D divisions to remain unbeaten after their eighteen shot win over PML ‘B’ at Tower Gardens. Derek Flack 14 Les Tottom 20, Maurice McNally 28 Tony Carey 10, Derek Lowden 21 John Cavanah 15. Chelmsford ‘C’ 63 (8 Pts) PML ‘B’ 45 (2). Chelmsford ‘D’ met Great Baddow ‘D’ in a Division 5 match at Great Baddow Recreation Ground with the home side easily winning by nineteen shots. Roy Deavin 14 Bob Gibbons 21, Ken Newhouse 22 Alan Francis 21, Bernie Pitt 7 Stan Ranganthan 30.

 

Central Midweek Bowling League competitions

 

The Chelmsford ‘B’ team gave their club colleagues Chelmsford ‘A’ a thrashing in the Central Midweek Bowling League Division 2 match at Tower Gardens winning 45 – 37 and taking seven points to the league leaders one! Chelmsford ‘A’ remain top of their division but by only five points over the nearest team Boreham ‘A’. The rink details were with Chelmsford ‘A’ skips named first – Tony Collings 17 Maureen Parris 17, Hugh Wensley 20 Martyn Gardner 28. In a Division 4 match the Chelmsford ‘C’ team lost their unbeaten record at Mayes Lane, Danbury to second placed Danbury ‘B’ but still remain top by six points. Chelmsford ‘C’ 28 (0 Pts) Danbury ‘B’ 54 (8). Ron Page 13 Bob Brimacombe 31, Maurice McNally 15 Paul Flack 23. Chelmsford ‘D’ met Braintree at Tower Gardens in a Division 6 game to win their second match in a row. Bob Barnett 17 Ron Doleman 22, Derek Flack 25 Donna Law 16.  Chelmsford ‘D’ 42 (6) Braintree 38 (2).  In the Team KO competition Chelmsford ‘A’ beat Ingatestone ‘A’ 44 – 30 to progress to the quarter final where they meet Great Baddow ‘A’.
