Essex County Men’s Bowling Association competitions

 

In the Essex County BA ‘Fours’ Area Semi-final Chelmsford Bowling Club had two teams through to this stage. Ray Keeble, Maurice McNally, Barry Colbourne and skip Adrian Thomas pulled off an extra end win in their match against Mike Fell’s team from Writtle BC at Tower Gardens to progress to the Area Final. The match being all square 18 – 18 after the required twenty one ends. Chelmsford held one shot after all bowls had been played on the extra end to clinch victory. Colbourne’s team now meet Martin King’s Great Baddow squad who knocked out Chelmsford’s Ray Walker, Tony Collings, Terry Little and Phil Kyffin in a close match at Great Baddow Recreation Ground. The Baddow squad had Eric Ovel at lead, Ian Barker playing two and Joe Harris in as three with King skipping. The Area 3 Final will be played on the Great Baddow green on Friday 2 July commencing at 6pm.

 

Chelmsford & District Bowling Association competitions

 

Week eight of the Chelmsford & District BA League matches have been completed with Burnham Hillside ‘A’ team closing the gap between them and Falcon ‘A’ at the top of the Division 1 table to just four points. Chelmsford ‘B’ continued their recent good form at Tower Gardens to beat club colleagues Chelmsford ‘A’ to win by ten shots overall and eight points to two. This keeps Chelmsford ‘B’ in third place and in striking distance of the leaders. The rink details were with Chelmsford ‘B’ skips named first – Martyn Gardner 23 Fred Dowding 17, Ray Walker 27 Phil Kyffin 17, Adrian Thomas 17 Terry Little 23. Chelmsford ‘B’ 67 (8 Pts) Chelmsford ‘A’ 57 (2). Chelmsford ‘C’ playing in Division 5 are flying high as league leaders and the only unbeaten team across the five divisions. They continued to rack up points with another maximum points win against club colleagues Chelmsford ‘D’ who also play in this division. Chelmsford ‘C’ 92 (10) Chelmsford ‘D’ 38 (0). Central Midweek Bowling League competitions

 

Seven matches have now been completed by all teams playing in the Chelmsford Central Midweek Bowling League. Chelmsford B C have four teams in this league with two of them currently leading their divisional tables. Chelmsford ‘A’ met Stock ‘A’ at Tower Gardens in a Division 2 match and won by fifteen shots overall to improve their top of the table position. Chelmsford ‘A’ 50 (8 Pts) Stock ‘A’ 35 (0). Sue Jones 24 Sid Slater 12, Tony Collings 26 Alan Hart 23. Chelmsford ‘B’ played PML ‘A’ at Bradford Street with PML winning by just four shots overall. Chelmsford ‘B’ 30 (2) PML ‘A’ 34 (6). Table toppers Chelmsford ‘C’ in Division 4 remain unbeaten after their encounter against Stock ‘B’ at Tower Gardens and have opened up a gap of fourteen points over the second placed team Danbury ‘B’. Chelmsford ‘C’ 44 (8) Stock ‘B’ 28 (0). Ray Mitchell 19 Ted Mimms 18, Maurice McNally 25 Don Cowell 10. A Division 6 match between Chelmsford ‘D’ and Trinity Methodist at Chancellor Park resulted in a thirteen shot overall win for Chelmsford. Chelmsford ‘D’ 45 (7) Trinity Methodist 32 (1).

Essex County Men’s Bowling Association competitions

 

Chelmsford BC has two teams left in the Essex County BA Fours competition after their recent wins. Ray Walker, Tony Collings, Terry Little and skip Phil Kyffin travelled to Maldon BC for their Area 3 Quarter Final match against Geoff Gasson’s four. The Chelmsford four had a marginal lead throughout this game winning 19 – 14 in the end. They now face Martin King’s Great Baddow squad in the Area Semi Final on the Great Baddow green. Chelmsford’s other team headed by Barry Colbourne played against Eddie Dennison’s team from Billericay BC at Tower Gardens and had a good win 22 – 17. Colbourne’s team now meet Mike Fell’s four of Writtle BC in the Area Semi Final at Tower Gardens. All other Chelmsford BC members who remained in Essex County competitions were eliminated in this week’s round of matches. Martyn Gardner lost 21 – 10 to England International Andy Squire at Maldon B C in the Singles. Tony Collings and Terry Little were beaten by Malcolm Stark’s duo at Braintree BC in the Pairs. Ray Walker, Tony Collings and Terry Little lost 13 – 14 to Bob Pooley, David Platt and Alan Hart at Stock BC in the Triples.

 

Chelmsford & District Bowling Association competitions

 

This week’s round of the Chelmsford & District BA League resulted in Chelmsford’s four teams recording two wins and two losses. Chelmsford ‘A’ took a drubbing at Belsteads Farm Lane in a Division 1 match against Falcon ‘A’ losing 53 – 67 to the current division leaders. Chelmsford ‘B’ had a better result in this same division by beating Southminster ‘A’ at Tower Gardens to keep them in striking distance of the top spot. Chelmsford ‘B’ 65 (8 Pts) Southminster ‘A’ 61 (2). Adrian Thomas 23 Eddy Barker 20, Ray Walker 27 Peter Spooner 18, Martyn Gardner 15 Mick Henry 23. Chelmsford ‘C’ in Division 5 are the current league leaders and they strengthened their position by winning 76 (8) – 54 (2) against Great Baddow ‘D’ at Great Baddow Recreation Ground. Maurice McNally 25 Sam Ranganthan 9, Ron Page 31 Maurice Keeble 21, Mick Candler 20 Alan Francis 24. Chelmsford ‘D’ lost their encounter against Billericay ‘B’ at Tower Gardens 58 (3) 79 (7).

 

 

Central Midweek Bowling League competitions

 

Chelmsford ‘A’ in Division 2 of the Central Midweek Bowling League are having a good season winning their latest match against Tiptree Jobserve ‘C’ and heading the table. Chelmsford ‘A’ 53 (8 Pts) Tiptree Jobserve ‘C’ 23 (0). Adrian Thomas 23 David Gooch 13, Hugh Wensley 30 Pat Mackshea 10. Chelmsford ‘B’ played Stock ‘A’ in this same division and recorded a good win. Chelmsford ‘B’ 39 (6) Stock ‘A’ 31 (2). Ivy Deavin 14 Frank Tipson 19, Bob Hill 25 Peter Fredericks 12. Current Division 4 leaders Chelmsford ‘C’ continued their unbeaten run by toppling Hatfield Peverel to win by thirty one shots. Chelmsford ‘C’ 52 (8) Hatfield Peverel 21 (0). Writtle ‘B’ had the better game against Chelmsford ‘D’ in a Division 6 game winning by just three shots. Chelmsford ‘D’ 25 (2) Writtle ‘B’ 28 (6). In the Preliminary Round of the CMBL Team Knockout Shield competition Chelmsford ‘C’ beat Stock ‘B’ 66 – 32 to progress to Round 1 where they now meet Falcon ‘C’ on 1 July on a home and away basis.

Jones beats noted County players

 

Sue Jones of Chelmsford Bowling Club successfully came through the Essex County Women’s Bowling Association ‘D’ Area knock-out stage of the Two Bowl competition at Wanstead Central BC. As Area winner Sue now qualifies for the County Quarter Finals to be held at Falcon BC, Chelmsford on 15 July. In her quest for the title and up against over fifty entrants Jones won five rounds of twenty one ends throughout the day to win this event. In the Semi-final she beat noted County players Ruth Howes, Harlow and Sylvia Bloomfield, Connaught BC in the final.

 

County ‘Top Club’ win against Epping

 

The Chelmsford BC ladies team entertained Epping BC ladies to a first round match in the Essex County Women’s Bowling Association (ECWBA) Top Club competition at Tower Gardens. This competition is played across four disciplines with the winners being the team to win the most of these or to score more shots than their opponents should there be an equal discipline count. Chelmsford got off to a flying start with Club Champion Sue Jones recording an excellent 21 – 10 win against Marie Hammond in the Singles. Next to finish was the Triples event with Chelmsford team of Sue Colbourne, Barbara Barnett and skip Pam Rout coming out on top 20 – 13 against Epping’s Jean Childs, Brenda Warner and Doreen Chisholm. With Chelmsford’s duo Lesley Collings and Jennie Wilson winning well against Sue Barringer and Sheila Coxall it looked like Chelmsford were heading for a match win. This game finished 33 – 11 in Chelmsford’s favour. The Fours game winner was always in doubt with the Epping team of Joan Guest, Pat Pleasant, Kay Stephens and skip Chris Edmonds winning in the end 20 – 16 against Chelmsford’s Rena Thomas, Pauline Barnard, Beryl Little and skip Pauline Kyffin. The match result was Chelmsford 3 Epping 1.

 

Essex County Men’s Bowling Association competitions

 

Chelmsford BC members have been engaged in the four major County competitions since the beginning of the outdoor season and they currently have Martyn Gardner playing England International Andy Squire, Maldon for a place in the Area Final. Tony Collings and Terry Little have also reached the last four in the Area stage of the Pairs competition. Ray Walker, Tony Collings and Terry Little play Alan Hart’s triple from Stock BC also at the Area semi-final stage. The four of Ray Walker, Tony Collings, Terry Little and Phil Kyffin travel to Maldon to meet Geoff Gasson’s four for a third round encounter.

Round six of the Chelmsford & District BA league competition had Chelmsford ‘A’ playing Burnham Hillside ‘A’ at Tower Gardens in a Division 1 encounter. The Chelmsford A team are having an indifferent season which continued in this match with the visitors winning comfortably and taking maximum points. Chelmsford ‘A’ 37 (0 pts) Burnham Hillside ‘A’ 83 (10) The rink scores were with Chelmsford skips named first – Fred Dowding 16 Daren Shipton 21, Phil Kyffin 7 Alex Cambell 32, Terry Little 14 Neil Barnes 30. Chelmsford ‘B’ team also in Division 1 met league leaders Falcon ‘A’ at Belsteads Farm Lane with the home team being put under pressure throughout this match by Chelmsford. The match was only decided on the last two ends to finish in the Adrian Thomas v Greg Moss match. Chelmsford’s other two rinks had finished to give them a one shot lead. Moss managed to salvage the game for Falcon by winning by seven shots. Chelmsford ‘B’ 53 (2) Falcon ‘A’ 59 (8). Central Midweek Bowling League competitions

 

In the Central Midweek Bowling League Chelmsford BC field four teams with their A and C teams heading their respective division. Week five had all of Chelmsford’s four teams chalking up a win to strengthen their league positions. The ‘A’ team were at Bradford Street to play PML’A’ in a Division 2 match and came away with maximum points to maintain their top spot. Chelmsford ‘A’ 51 (8 Pts) PML ‘A’ 27 (0). The Chelmsford ‘B’ team played Tiptree Jobserve ‘A’ in a Division 2 match at Tower Gardens and recorded a maximum points win 44 (8) – 32 (0). The rink scores were with Chelmsford skips named first – Martyn Gardner 25 George Lawrence 15, Maureen Parris 19 George Cottee 17. The Division 4 match between unbeaten league leaders Chelmsford ‘C’and Hall Street Methodist at Tower Gardens resulted in another maximum points win for the home side 50 (8) – 26 (0) to keep them firmly in the top spot. Lowly Chelmsford D’ played third placed Ingatestone ‘C’ at the Ingatestone Community Centre green and came away with a good win 46 (6) – 32 (2) to improve their points tally. Chelmsford ‘A’ team played Writtle ‘A’ last season’s league winners in the Chelmsford & District BA League Division 1 at Romans Way and won 63 (8 Pts) – 60 (2). The rink scores were with Chelmsford Skips named first – Fred Dowding 14 Derek Cook 24, Terry Little 25 Paul Brandis 17, Phil Kyffin 24 Mike Fell 19.  The Chelmsford ‘B’ team met Burnham Hillside BC ‘A’ in a Division 1 encounter at Tower Gardens. They continued their recent good form by winning 55 (8) – 45 (2) to move them up to second place in the league. Martyn Gardner 20 Darren Shipton 18, Ray Walker 18 Neil Barnes 12, Adrian Thomas 14 Alex Cambell 15. The Chelmsford ‘C’ team were also at Tower Gardens for their Division 5 match against Writtle ‘C’. Division 2 leaders Chelmsford ‘A’ came unstuck against Danbury ‘A’ in their Central Midweek League match played in very wet weather at Mayes Lane but they remain top by two points over Boreham A. Chelmsford ‘A’ 29 (2 Pts) Danbury ‘A’ (6). Adrian Thomas 21 Terry Griffin 12, Jennie Wilson 8 Cherry Richardson 24. Chelmsford ‘B’ played Boreham ‘A’ at Tower Gardens and were outclassed by the visitors who mastered the wet conditions to win 34 (8) – 16 (0). Martyn Gardner 11 Keith Skinner 13, Maureen Parris 5 John Lucy 21. The Chelmsford ‘C’ squad were at Romans Place to play Writtle ‘A’ in a Division 4 match and came away winning their fourth match in a row 47 (6) - 34 (2). Chelmsford & District Bowling Association competitions

 

Chelmsford ‘B’ team continued their good form in the higher Division 1 this time by beating Maldon ‘A’ at Tower Gardens 72 – 58 and taking eight points to Maldon’s two. The rink scores were with Chelmsford skips named first – Barry Colbourne 31 Brian Stubbings 20, Ray Walker 28 John Weavers 14, Martyn Gardner 13 Andy Squire 24. The B’s now move up to second place in the league after four matches. Chelmsford ‘A’ travelled to Lake Meadows Park for their Division 1 league match against newly promoted Billericay ‘B’. On an unusually free running green the Chelmsford squad were pegged back by the home side to suffer a maximum points defeat with Billericay recording their first league win of the new season 75 – 56. The rink scores were with Chelmsford skips named first – Phil Kyffin 19 Albert Ayres 21, Fred Dowding 24 Eddie Dennison 27, Terry Little 23 Jim Pemberton 27. Chelmsford ‘C’ in Division 5 remain unbeaten after four matches with another win chalked up against PML ‘B’ at Bradford Street to keep them at the top of the table. Chelmsford ‘A’ team in Division 2 of the Central Midweek Bowling League continued with their winning ways by dispatching Boreham ‘A’ in convincing style 37 – 20 at Boreham to take the maximum eight points and remain unbeaten after three matches. The rink scores were with Chelmsford skips names first – Hugh Wensley 17 Peter Ward 11, Ray Walker 20 John Lucey 9. Chelmsford ‘B’ team were at Mayes Lane Danbury for their Division 2 match against Danbury ‘A’. This resulted in a narrow win for the home side 32 – 30 to take six points to Chelmsford’s two. Chelmsford ‘C’ are having a good start to their league programme in Division 4 and maintained their one hundred percent record by beating Witham ‘B’ at Tower Gardens 34 (6 Pts) – 31 (2). Chelmer Ladies Bowls League

 

Chelmsford BC ladies hosted Ingatestone BC ladies in a Chelmer Ladies Bowls League match with the visitors being too strong and winning comfortable 44 – 31 to take the maximum six points. Pauline Kyffin 13 Sue Gower 24, Ivy Deavin 18 Brenda Dodson 20.

Chelmsford & District Bowling Association competitions

 

Week three of the Chelmsford & District BA League competition had all four of Chelmsford Bowling Club’s League teams playing each other at Tower Gardens. Chelmsford ‘A’ team entertained their club colleague of the Chelmsford ‘B’ team in a Division 1 encounter. This match clearly demonstrated the strength across the club in that these two teams battled neck and neck throughout this match. The final result ended in a very narrow two shot overall win for the A’s to take eight of the ten points on offer. The B’s were clearly disappointed with the result as they had forced their opponents onto the back foot on many occasions only to be denied victory on the last end of the finishing rink match. The match details were with Chelmsford ‘A’ skips named first – Fred Dowding 17 Ray Walker 17, Phil Kyffin 18 Adrian Thomas 18 Terry Little 18 Martyn Gardner 16. Chelmsford ‘A’ 53 (8 Pts) Chelmsford ‘B’ 51 (2). Playing alongside this match was the Chelmsford ‘C’ hosting Chelmsford’ D’ in a Division 5 match. Again this match developed into a ding dong battle in its early stages but the C’s drew away at the finish across all three rinks to finish victors 63 (10 Pts) – 47 (0). Ron Page 21 Bernie Pitt 14, Roy Shirley 22 Ken Newhouse 16, Maurice McNally 20 Ernest Smart 17.

 

London & Southern Counties Bowling Association competitions

 

Chelmsford BC played South Benfleet & Canvey Island in the preliminary round of the London & Southern Counties BA Triples competition and won 18 – 10. Ray Walker represents the club in the Champion of Champions ‘Gold Badge’ singles competition and he won his first round match at Rochford BC against Granville Hicks 21 – 14. Walker now meets Jimmy Oakes of Harlow BC in round two. In the four fours ‘Shield’ competition Chelmsford were matched against Rayleigh BC in the preliminary round with two rinks at home and two away. The Chelmsford home rinks finished their matches seven shots up whilst the away squads won by nine shots overall to give a combined win of sixteen shots. The rinks scores were Bob Barnett 16 Robert Cooper 20, Terry Little 27 Robert Grant 16, Fred Dowding 11 Eddie Clarke 20, Ray Walker 27 Geoff Croft 9. Chelmsford 81 Rayleigh 65. Chelmsford now play local rivals Falcon in the next round.

 

Bowls England competitions

 

Ray Walker and Terry Little, Chelmsford BC met John Fitzgerald and Bert Hunt, Gt Baddow BC in the first round of the Bowls England Over 55 pairs competition and won 23 – 16. They now meet club colleagues Tony Skingley and Martyn Gardner in round two.

In the Central Midweek Bowling League the Chelmsford ‘A’ team met Tiptree Jobserve ‘A’ in a Division 2 match at Tower Gardens. This resulted in a maximum points win for the home side winning 49 (8 Pts) – 24 (0). Ray Walker 25 Robert Measom 8, Tony Collings 24 George Lawrence 16. John Caton’s Chelmsford ‘B’ team were at Tiptree to play their ‘C’ team in a Division 2 match and came away with a 33 (6 Pts) – 27 (2) win. Martyn Gardner 14 Pat Mackshea 19, Les Parris 19 Roy Davidson 8. Chelmsford ‘C’ were at Belsteads Farm Lane for a match against Falcon ‘B’ and won 37 (6 Pts) – 33 (2). Ray Mitchell 21 Sam Passway 9, Mick Allen 16 David Pond 24. Chelmsford ‘C’ were at Ingatestone to play their ‘C’ team in a Division 6 match which resulted in the home side winning 31 (6Pts) – 28 (2). In the first match of the annual ‘Terry Davis Centenary Cup’ played between Chelmsford BC and Essex County BC, Westcliffe at Tower Gardens the home side racked up a thirty two shot lead to take to Westcliffe in the second match on the 29 May. Bowls England competitions

 

Chelmsford BC entertained Gt Baddow BC in the first round of the Bowls England national ‘Top Club’ competition. This event is played across five disciplines with the team winning the most disciplines progressing into the next round. Chelmsford fielded Ray Walker against Eric Ovel in the four bowl singles and in a mammoth two and a half hour thirty end encounter Ovel had a counting bowl to win 21 – 20. Eric Smith met Mike Brickel in the two bowl singles match with Brickel winning 15 - 11. In the Pairs match Tony Collings and partner Terry Little were against Martin King and Ian Barker with the Chelmsford duo winning 26 – 20. Chelmsford’s triple of Graham Robson, Bob Barnett and Martyn Gardner played Baddow’s Dave Walden, Bob Crick and Joe Harris with Chelmsford winning 22 – 15. The fours match turned out to be a win for Gt Baddow 30 – 19 with their team of Ken Perry, Derek Taylor, Ian Dudley and skip Peter Brett playing Chelmsford’s Barry Colbourne, Roger Jones, Steve Edwards and skip Fred Dowding. The result of the match was a 3 – 2 win for Gt Baddow who progress to play either RHP or Silver End BC in the next round.

 

Chelmsford & District Bowling Association competitions

 

Week two of the new season has produced mixed results for Chelmsford Bowling Club’s four teams in the local Chelmsford & District BA League competitions. Chelmsford ‘A’ were scheduled to meet Southminster ‘A’ in a Division 1 match but this game had to be cancelled due to Chelmsford being unable to field a team from their registered players. This match will be played later in the season. Newly promoted Chelmsford ‘B’ met last season’s Division 1 champions Writtle ‘A’ at Tower Gardens. The hosts experienced the quality of the Writtle side and lost this encounter 54 – 68 with Writtle gaining eight points to Chelmsford’s two. Ron Page took his Chelmsford ‘C’ team to Lake Meadows Park Billericay for their match in Division five against Billericay ‘B’. The Chelmsford ‘C’ team also in Division 5 were at home at Tower Gardens to Writtle ‘C’ with the visitors having the best result winning 59 – 42 to take eight points to Chelmsford’s two. Central Midweek Bowling League competitions

 

Chelmsford Bowling Club have commenced their CMBL League matches with Chelmsford ‘A’ meeting Chelmsford ‘B’ in a Division 2 clash. The A’s came out on top winning 51 – 32 and 6 points to 2. The rink scores were Tony Collings 15 Martyn Gardner 20, Adrian Thomas 36 Les Parris 12. Chelmsford ‘C’ in Division 4 played Danbury ‘B’ at Tower Gardens and won 31 – 27 in a close match to gain six points to Danbury’s two. Ron Page 12 Peter Martin 16, Maurice McNally 19 Paul Flack 11. Chelmsford ‘D’ team were at Braintree BC playing the B team which resulted in a win for the home side 42 – 32. Bob Barnett 20 Mark Law 13, Mick Candler 12 Albert Ayres 29.

 

Chelmer Ladies Bowls League competitions

 

Chelmsford BC Ladies were at Belsteads Farm Lane for their opening CLBL match against Falcon BC Ladies. Falcon were too good on the day to win comfortably 38 – 27 and gain the maximum six points on offer. Pauline Barnard 10 Jackie Thomas 18, Jennie Wilson 17 Val Bridge 20.

Chelmsford & District Bowling Association competitions

 

Chelmsford Bowling Club has opened up their new competitive outdoor season in the local Chelmsford & District BA League Division 1 in fine style. This season they have two teams in this top division with the Chelmsford ‘B’ team joining their colleagues Chelmsford ‘A’ as winners of last season’s Division 2. Chelmsford ‘B’ captained by Adrian Thomas travelled to Lake Meadows, Billericay for their opening three rink encounter with Billericay ‘A’ to produce a stunning victory 61 – 40 and gaining ten maximum points. Ray Walker’s rink beat Albert Ayres 22 – 9, Adrian Thomas won 20 - 14 against Eddy Dennison and Martyn Gardner’s squad turned in a hard fought 19 - 17 victory over Rex Hobbs. Chelmsford’s ‘A’ team captained by Fred Dowding also got off to a good start against Maldon ‘A’ at Tower Gardens drawing their match 57 – 57 to gain six points to Maldon’s four. Bowls England competitions

 

Chelmsford BC entertained RHP BC in the Preliminary Round of the Bowls England National Two Fours inter club KO competition and won 43 – 35. The rink scores were – Fred Dowding 20 Albie Evans 19, Terry Little 23 Bob Sargent 16.
